Does the Messiah have the Name of God?
There are a few Scriptures that some interpret as prophetic references to Messiah being called God. Some of these Scriptures are:
Isaiah 7:14, "Therefore, the Lord Himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel." Immanuel means "God with us".
Isaiah 9:6, "For unto us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace..."
Jeremiah 23:5-6, "The days are coming," declares the LORD, "when I will raise up to David a righteous Branch,...This is the name by which he will be called: YHWH our Righteousness"
There are those who disagree that these verses give the Name of God to Messiah, and I intend to address those arguments, elsewhere. Most of those who object to the verses in Isaiah claim that each of these verses is a separate prophecy that is unconnected to the other prophecies that are mentioned. However, I think that there is a common theme that indicates that all these verses are referring to the same person, the Messiah. For Isaiah 7:1 to 11:16 seems to go back and forth between talking about God's judgement of Aram/Damascus and Ephriam/Samaria and talking about the son to be born that will bring peace. No one would argue that Isaiah 7:1-9, 8:1-8, 9:8-21, and 11:13 is talking about Aram/Damascus and Ephriam/Samaria. And so it would be natural to conclude that Isaiah 7:10-16, 8:9-10, 9:6-7, and 11:1-12 are also talking about the same person which we recognize in 11:1-2 as Messiah.
It should not be surprising that Isaiah might predict that God would become a man. For Isaiah 6:1-5 recounts how Isaiah was astonished at the reality of seeing God in the form of a human King. From this point on we hear Isaiah hint at a son to be born who will be called by various titles we would attribute to God. And it should not be surprising that Isaiah may have used indirect language in this matter. For Isaiah was sorely astonished at the Vision of God in human form. So he would not have wanted to completely astonish and offend his listeners as well.
